Nice and the South of France – my ‘expanded’ backyard adventures on the shores of the mediterranean

Photos from my trips over the years

I live in Brighton and Gatwick airport is our nearby gateway to Europe. I discovered the South of France about 13 years ago and have been going regularly ever since.

It’s so easy. You can leave Brighton on a cold wet rainy day and be eating lunch in Nice three hours later. Sitting in cafes looking at the mediterranean through palm trees.

I once met a guy there who said he regularly flew out early in the morning, had a great day in Nice, and flew back to the UK late evening. I was intrigued by the concept of seeing Europe as ‘local’ – part of an extended backyard to explore. It felt like some kind of secret alternative way of extending the possibilities of life in a glamorous yet low budget Easyjet kind of way. I’ve always worked in retail so am definitely not rich, but you don’t have to be.

I realised after Lockdown that casual air travel isn’t great environmentally (tho I don’t use a car), so I’ve cut back on visits in recent years, but here’s a few pics of our most recent trip, our first with Baby Violet, plus some pics from previous holidays (or temporarily living somewhere else, as I like to think of it).

Hotel West End in March is an off peak bargain with a feel of a glamorous past.
The same hotel in past times
Love the palm trees on the Promenade Des Anglais
It’s not always sunny but always impressive
    Nice Old Town
    Seaside cafe glamour
December is a special time – Daytime mild temperatures mean you can go for runs in T-shirts and shorts in the day and walk round Christmas markets at night, fully wrapped up.
    Night times are pretty special
One of the first times we stayed in a loft studio flat in the old town with a great view
The same view but from the other direction
I originally started going for the tennis in April in Monte Carlo, when I was into tennis.
Monaco – My mum asked if she could go so we went twice together. Note the setting up for the Grand Prix by the port
Two classic views – palm trees, sea and sunsets (and Sacha jumping)
Surrounding areas are pretty spectacular also
    Menton
Eze old town – we had a drink in that restaurant
    Cagnes Sur Mer old town
    Byeeeeee…….
